Andy Harcourt, MD - Chief Resident

Andy is new to the Mobile area. After growing up in Norman, Oklahoma, he attended undergrad at Southern Methodist University in Dallas studying biomedical engineering. After taking a year off to travel to Europe, he returned to Oklahoma to attend medical school at the University of Oklahoma. Andy and his wonderful wife Suzanne are enjoying life here in Mobile.

Taniya Smith, DO - Chief Resident

Taniya is also familiar with the area, having been born and raised in Biloxi, Mississippi. Taniya decided to take a slightly different path after graduating from Xavier University; she decided to go to an osteopathic medical school. After graduating from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, she decided it would be nice to move back down south and closer to home. Taniya enjoys reading, music and travel when time allows.

Jean-Ginst Eugene, MD

From Ponce, Puerto Rico, Jean-Ginst has come all the way to Mobile. He has a strong desire to bring back the individual relationship between the patient and the physician and feels that family medicine is key to accomplishing that goal. He earned his undergrad at MDCC Barry University and attened medical school at Universidad Central del Este. Before choosing USA, he did a year of Internal Medicine at Hospital Damas at Ponce School of Medicine. Jean-Ginst is originally from Haiti, and we are glad to have him for many reasons in addition to his fluency in Spanish, French and Creole. Having spent most of his life in Miami, he is used to the heat and humidity in Mobile and he feels right at home here. Jean-Ginst enjoys teaching salsa and playing soccer.

Tariq Farooqui, MD

Tariq comes to us from a Family Medicine Residency Program in Berwyn, Illinois. Since high school, Tariq has had a strong interest in medicine and pursued his interest at St. Matthew’s University. During medical school he discovered that family medicine allowed him the diversity and challenges he desired. Tariq is excited about his move from Chicago to the warm air of the Gulf of Mexico. What little spare time he has is devoted to tennis, music, chess and scuba.

Bernita McCants, MD

Bernita joins us after graduating from the University of South Alabama, College of Medicine. She is originally from Crystal Springs, Mississippi and went to Alcorn State for undergrad. Bernita is the proud parent of a darling baby girl. Before she became a doctor and a mother, Bernita enjoyed arts and crafts and fishing.

Will Burkhalter, MD

Will is a native of South Carolina.  He attended medical school at the University of South Carolina. Having some prior residency experience there, he worked in a rural ER several years before coming to South Alabama. He enjoys skiing and music.

Stephen Groves, MD

Steve is new to Alabama. He comes from Fairmont, West Virginia, and attended undergrad at Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia studying in the Physician Assistant Program. Besides a B.S. degree as a Physician Assistant, Steve has a Master's Degree in the Physician Assistant Rural Medicine Program. After working 9 years as a PA, Steve decided to go to medical school at St. Matthew's University School of Medicine. Steve is excited to be living in Mobile with his wife and 6 year old son.

 

Nonye Osuji, MD

Nonye was born in England, and came to the United States with her family when she was in Elementary School. But before coming to the United States, she lived in Nigeria, where her parents are from.  Currently, her Parents and siblings live in Houston. Nonye says Mobile reminds her of Houston because of the very hot summer months!!

Nonye graduated from The University of Texas at Austin, Texas (Football Champions Longhorns 2005/06 season) with a degree in Biochemistry.  After college, she participated in Americorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) in Washington, DC for a year. She earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston. She loves reading, basketball and travel. Although she's not sure where, she intends to practice Family Medicine with Obstetrics when she complete our residency program.

Maritere Rochet, MD

Maritere was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and graduated from Universidad Central del Caribe, School of Medicine. She received a masters degree in Public Health and is interested in Preventive Medicine. She met her husband, Benjamin, while in medical school. He is in the Navy and works as an internal medicine doctor at the Naval Hospital in Pensacola. They love lining in Daphne, on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay where they spend time with their 5 year old son, Daniel, at the park and the beach. 

Angela Yiu, MD

Angela was born in Taiwan, ROC and moved to Hong Kong and Macau when she was 10.  Angela earned an undergraduate degree from Tulane where she also went to grad and medical school. She likes crafts, photography, modeling, writing and cooking. Angela hasn't decided where she wants to go after her residency program.

 

PGY1

Jody Bahnmiller , MD

Jody came to Mobile most recently from Tallahassee, Florida.  Before going to medical school at the American University of the Caribbean, Jody spent 10 year as a radiographer in Michigan.  She is newly wed to her husband Bruce.  She enjoys the outdoors, especially waterskiing, scuba diving and playing softball.

Heather Cannon , MD

Heather comes to Mobile from Jackson, Mississippi, bringing along her husband Derek, who is an intern at USA’s Surgery Residency.  She attended the University of Mississippi Medical School as well as for undergrad.  She is originally from Oxford.  She enjoys jogging, yoga and cooking.

Alina Hongsakaphadana, MD

Alina was born in Michigan and attended Michigan State University where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree and Medical Degree. Alina enjoys cooking, traveling, movies, swimming, and watching basketball, football, and hockey games. She is excited to be in the warm Mobile climate and can't wait to be able to spend free time at the Beach!

Samantha Lindsay, MD

Samantha comes to internship with some different experiences than most, she has been a probation officer and owned a day spa before attending medical school at Ross University.  She enjoys singing, dancing and spending time with her husband, Ralph.

Meridith Maxwell, MD

Meredith is a native of Hammond, Louisiana.  She attended medical school at Ross University.  She has purchased her first home in Mobile, and is enjoying settling in.

Greg Myrick , MD

Greg is a native of Mobile.  After years as a paramedic, fire medic, and flight medic, Greg decided to go to medical school.  He attended the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine.  He is happy to be staying in Mobile with his wife DeAnna and their five children.

Philemon Spencer , MD

Philemon joins our program after having just completed a surgery internship in Birmingham.  He attended medical school at Ben Gurion University of the Negev.  He enjoys photography, computer programming, bicycling, sailing, woodworking and piano.
