| Introduction Purpose: This instructional material is intended for use during the 3rd year family medicine clerkship at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. The content is intended to offer targeted instructions to students based on the 20 common complaints and illnesses seen in the ambulatory offices. It is not intended to offer a comprehensive evaluation and management strategy but instead is designed to provide a framework upon which you can build your clinical knowledge base and skill set. Included in the curriculum are the following: Video: There are 15 video presentations. The formats for 10 follow a Simulated Encounter that includes the encounter itself, commentary on the encounter, a written summary which is duplicated in your handout, and additional teaching done in a question and answer format. There are 5 additional traditional PowerPoint presentations. Handout: The handout contains a summary of information found on the video as well as in the notebook. The information is found in more detail within the video and in the articles. The information in the videos and the handout should be sufficient for testing purposes. Notebook: Typically the notebook contains articles from American Family Physician which are germane to the clinical topic. Evaluation: You will be tested on your ability to assimilate and apply the information in a clinical setting. There will be 5 questions on each module. The information needed for answering the questions will be located in the video and the handout. However, you will be expected to apply the information to successfully pass the test. This will require more than rote memorization. It is anticipated that most students will have to do additional reading to master the material. |
